Wales A–Z Navigation

We are continuing with our series of quizzes that test your navigational knowledge, today with a visit to Wales! When given directions, including both cardinal directions and road names, plus the occasional landmark towns or cities, can you correctly identify where you end up? For our professional drivers, I'm sure this will be quite the doddle, but the rest of us will need to cobble together whatever knowledge we've gained over years of adventuring to hopefully compete. In our previous England edition, we started off easy with only cities being used, however, Wales only has 7 cities, so there may be a few larger towns also included for the sake of variety!
Departing from the north of Cardiff on the M4, junction 32 you're going to head west just about 12 miles along the motorway to junction 27 where we hop off, already at the destination just a stone's throw to the west - where are you?
To the north now, heading out of Bangor from the east side on the North Wales expressway at junction 9. You're going north, straight across the Britannia Bridge and will be following the North Wales expressway as far as it will go; 22 miles of driving will see you cross another strait and arriving at junction 1 and your destination - where are you?
Departing from the central Wales coastal town of Aberystwyth you will be heading inland along the A44, today will be a slightly longer journey as the A-road winds through the landscape. 23 miles later and it is time to turn north on the A470 - through Llanidloes this road lasts just 12 miles before briefly connecting to the A489 to pass through Newtown where you once again turn north again on the A483. Another 13 miles and you arrive at your destination just short of the England border - where are you?
Starting now from the United Kingdom's smallest city, St David's, you will need to head inland west to get underway, taking the A487 from the north side of the town. 15 miles of driving will bring you to the town of Fishguard, where you continue along the coast north following the A487 further. The road snakes inland, travelling through Eglwyswrw and snaking back towards the coast before arriving at your destination, departing the A487 just after the Afon Teifi - where are you?
Now, you depart Wrexham from its west side on the Mold Road/Wrexham Road A541, via Abermorddu and Caergwrle before arriving at Mold 10 miles later. Cutting west on the Mold bypass A494 you head another 10 miles through the town of Ruthin where you turn north on the A525. Now the run north, 10 miles through Denbigh before you finally arrive, stopping just short of the A55, where are you?
Back to Cardiff, you are heading once again from the north side at junction 32 but this time west - stick to the motorway for 30 miles bypassing Bridgend and Port Talbot before arriving at junction 42. From here, link up with the A483 heading west further for another 4 miles before you arrive at your destination - where are you?
Still in Cardiff, and once again leaving from
junction 32, but not on the motorway... instead, you're heading north along the A470. Bypassing Taff's Well, Abercynon and Aberfan, 18 miles later you will arrive on the south side of your destination - where are you?
Now we're in Abermaw, or Barmouth, on the western coast of Wales. Leaving from the north of town on the A496, you'll be winding along the coast to reach your destination. Passing beneath the shadow of Harlech Castle and through the fields, you keep heading north until finally turning west 15 miles later, crossing the Afon Dwyryd and joining the A487 - you can stay on the A487, but instead, you take the smaller roads through Minffordd and down onto the Britannia Terrace before arriving - where are you?
Now from Llandudno, you're heading south on the Royal Welsh Highway for 3 miles so you can join the North Wales Expressway, eastbound at junction 19. 9 miles later at 23A you will depart to join the A548 at Pensarn to head west for another 4 miles. Your destination is here, just across the River Clwyd - where are you?
Heading North/North-West out of the town of Abergavenny on the A40 for 7 miles will let you turn off on the A479 as you cross the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park. 12 miles later, you arrive on the south side of Bronllys, but you bypass it east to stay on the A479 which cuts north for 2 miles before joining the A470. This road runs along the River Wye, at 11 miles later requires you to cross the river at Builth Wells before joining the A863 to continue north. A quick 6-mile shunt up this road leaves you at your destination - where are you?
