Do you think you know your way around England? You'd better see if you can follow these directions and end up in the right place! Today we're starting our tour of the UK with an England-specific test of your road knowledge, we're starting off reasonably easy, we give you a starting city, some navigation instructions to follow, and all you need to do is correctly identify the city you end up in. Sound simple? As long as you know your roads, you'll nail it! I'm sure some of you long-distance drivers will only need look at the final motorway junction exit or A-road to know where you are, but to help I have given rough distances and routes taken from start to finish, just to give the rest of us a fighting chance...
Leaving Plymouth East via the Devon Expressway (A38), travel roughly 37 miles - at which point you can either transition onto the M5 at junction 31 or divert down the A30 - either way, with the motorway circling around the south and east of the city and the A30 cutting west - where are you?
Heading out from the North of Colchester along the A12 (around junction 29) you head roughly north, for about 20 miles, travelling beyond Ipswich before diverting down the A140. Follow the A140 north another 32 miles before arriving on the southern edge of this city - where are you?
Leaving from the northern edge of Manchester and following the M62, head east through Huddersfield and Leeds and dodging various other major routes including the A1(M), nearly crossing the breadth of the country. We hop off at Junction 34 some 53 miles later to head north on the A19, temporarily joining the A63 to avoid Selby, before crossing the A64 to arrive at the south edge of this city 20 miles later - where are you?
Departing from Birmingham at the north edge along the A38(M) and immediately joining the M6 on Spaghetti Junction (10) northbound. Just 5 miles later depart at Junction 8 to join the M5 southbound. Follow the windy path of the M5 out of the urban sprawl for 28 miles, before departing at Junction 6 on the North-Eastern edge of this city - where are you?
Time for a short hop now, departing from Bristol in the south-east on the A4, you will need to head just 5 miles before joining the A36 eastbound to enter your next destination - where are you?
Leaving out of Liverpool in the north along the M58 eastbound, travel 12 miles before joining the M6 at junction 26 to head north - you will be heading a long way, over 100 miles, to junction 43 of the M6 where you will be on the east side of the city, and just a stone's throw from the border with Scotland - where are you?
Leaving out of Worcester heading west, along the A4103, pass through the countryside and via many small settlements before arriving on the north-eastern edge of our destination 22 miles later - where are you?
Time for another short hop between neighbouring cities - depart from Newcastle upon Tyne from the south, crossing the Tyne via the bridge of the same name along the Gateshead Highway before joining the A184 eastbound. 5 miles later, turn south at the A19 for a short hop before turning east again along the A1231 - crossing the River Wear and joining your destination on the North-Western edge - where are you?
Time to make another run from London - this time heading westbound on the M3. 60 miles later you will connect with the M27 at Junction 4 - head east following the motorway as it curves through the local settlements before departing for the M275 at Junction 12 to head south - this a spur of a motorway that drops you in the city. Where are you?
