This quiz is about all things autumn, with the colder, darker days drawing in at an incredibly rapid pace it can be easy to get down in the doom and gloom, but there are a lot of wonderful things happening this time of year that shouldn't be forgotten. This is just as true for the natural world, while it may look like its moving into a bit of a drab phase, with trees going dormant and lots of animals hibernating, there are plenty of other processes happening and amazing things going on - so let us test your knowledge about the world around you with 10 questions all about autumn!
Around this time of year, the pathways and fields are littered with detritus, primarily leaves as they fall from the trees, but plenty of seeds also fall around this time, ready to be transplanted to spring up after the cold weather is gone. One is perhaps more iconic than all the others, not just because they are a part of a popular game for kids, but the green spikey almost alien-like pod is hard to miss on the ground! This pod gives way to its recognisable deep-brown bean-shaped inner more commonly known as a conker, but what is a conker?
Another icon of autumn is the pinecone, varieties of cone drop from various conifers and have a distinct shape that is commonly seen around late autumn (often appearing even later in Christmas decorations!) - but what is a pinecone?
There may be some debate in the modern English-speaking world as to whether the season is called Autumn or Fall, but do you know the older and likely original English name for the season?
A lot of birds migrate away for the colder months, but some bird numbers actually increase over autumn as birds leave our colder northern neighbours to enjoy the "warmer" British isles (hard to believe, I know!). Which of these birds will climb in population over autumn?
While many of our native birds will be flying from their home on this isle to warmer pastures, passing through or coming to make the British Isles it is home for the winter, one is travelling the furthest of them all - which of these birds migrates the furthest?
As the damp, colder days start to become more frequent, one piece of nature will be looking to make the most of it - mushrooms. They love dank environments and can be seen popping up all over autumn, with perhaps the most iconic being the toadstool. There is no official definition of a toadstool, but which of the following would be most recognisable as a toadstool?
If you venture out into the woods today you might encounter stags and bucks having a bit of a fight with one another - clashing their antlers to size one another up to see who comes out the victor. This coincides with the deer being in ready to mate, but what is the name for the brawls seen between the males?
This time of year we expect all the little critters around the United Kingdom to disappear as they bunk down for the cold months, but which of the following will actually Hibernate for the whole winter?
Around sunset, it is not uncommon to see massive groups of birds swirling around together, especially around sunset. These are called murmurations, but which bird are you likely to see doing it?
