I would mention this elsewhere, but this resource was so valuable for our journey to Prague that I want to start with this now - consider this a taster for all the things we loved about Prague, but if you decide to go then check out this amazing resource: HONEST GUIDE. They do a mix of content including full guides for visiting Prague, plus plenty of entertaining content and debunking some of the less-than-useful guides you tend to find on platforms like TikTok. I subbed to help plan my visit to the city, but I still continue to watch their videos to this day! (Plus, I'm sure I will return to Prague one day...),
We, as recurring visitors to Love Our Adventures can probably gather, love a bit of history. At the very least, I personally love history and tend to drag the people around me to explore it regardless of whether they want to or not. Exploring Wales and England, touring castles and travelling abroad to Naples and Bruges to see their collective thousands of years of ancient and modern architecture. Like many of the aforementioned places, Prague has an unmistakable beauty that transcends a love of all things historic. Plus, Prague is still a major capital European city, so you can be damn sure there will be plenty of great attractions and experiences for you to see and enjoy. We don't really do reviews at Love Our Adventures, I rather discuss our experiences and hopefully you find something to love along the way, but should you go to Prague? I think the city is a must-see!
Prague is a gorgeous city, that expands out over a grand area with plenty of different districts dotted around, all with varied things to see and do. To start, we will look at the area that tends to draw the most tourism to the city - Prague 1, or more poetically the Old Town (For reference, most of the Prague districts are numbered, a nice and simple system, but they also tend to have Czech names too). Most photos that show unquestionably gorgeous historical spaces are probably taken around the Old Town, even though there are plenty of additional historic beauty spots in the city, and like many of the amazing places I discuss here, I truly believe these places live up to their photos. Let us start with perhaps one of the most iconic parts of Prague - the Astronomical Clock in the Old Town Square. This seemingly incomprehensible fixture on the side of the side of the Old Town Hall is an exceptionally beautiful thing, and well worth your time. That all being said, the Old Town Square is one colossal attraction, with multiple amazing things to check out including the Jan Hus monument (Památník Jana Husa) in the open square and the towering Church of Our Lady before Týn (Chrám Matky Boží před Týnem), but these are simply icons amongst a whole host of stunning buildings then making the Old Town Square a part of your visit to Prague is a must.
Still, there are plenty of other reasons to walk the Old Town, and we found ourselves often coming back to the Old Town as so many incredible aspects of the city are easily accessible from here - those planning a visit would do well to put themselves near the Old Town to really make the most of your time in Prague. From the Old Town, you can easily get to one of the other greatest landmarks in the area, the Charles Bridge, an impressive walk over The Vltava that also allows you to connect to Prague 5 and some other awesome attractions beyond, which I will get into shortly. Otherwise, you could easily spend a day or two just exploring each of the streets, along the Celetná to Prašná brána, from museum to museum, gorgeous historic street to street you are sure to have a blast exploring.
Even to the south and east of the Old Town are some beautiful places to explore where you can find plenty of things to do, like around Prague 2 and the plaza at Bazilika SV. Ludmily, the fortress at Vyšehrad and, of course, the Castle which occupies most sightlines around the city plus the Waldstein Gardens tucked away below it. A lot of the other attractions are worth a write-up in their own regard so I will talk about these later. Beyond sightseeing there are plenty of shopping options, starting out from Národní Muzeum near the centre of the city (once again, another beautiful building) and walking up Wenceslas Square you will find yourself on the main shopping run of the city, with plenty of varied options for all your retail needs - down to the Můstek Underground station where the shopping options head out in multiple directions. If you are looking to escape the more hectic areas of the city then the river is a great place to escape to, with the waterfront having plenty of bars along it, and several parks & green spaces to escape to - we escaped the heat on a long walking day with a quick lap on Střelecký ostrov (Archer's Island), the light canopy of trees and gentle breeze up the river were heavenly, although we were not lucky enough to meet the Nutria (or Coypu a kind of giant Rodent a bit like a beaver or mini-capybara who call the city home). Just about every corner of the city has statues, art installations and incredible vistas, so follow your feet and you never know what you might find...
A trip to the Czech Republic is never complete without enjoying one of the local delicacies: beer! The Czechs love their beer and are just about the highest consumers of beer on the planet. This means that there are plenty of great options for those who love a drink or two, from the traditional Czech bars and pubs to the local breweries of various sizes offering the opportunity to taste what they offer. Most corners of Prague offer five-star places to drink, but there are plenty of unique and incredible experiences just waiting for you. We ended up enjoying a walk around the Beer Museum, had a drink produced by a robot bartender and, on an especially hot day, enjoyed the ice bar. Breweries were well worth a visit, and being in Prague we had to go to the Staropramen brewery and have a tipple. Just about everywhere we drank was awesome, and it wasn't just limited to beer, plenty of variety in the drinks you can get and we had a nice afternoon in the NIGHTMARE Horror Bar where we enjoyed many delicious themed cocktails in an appropriately dark and scary basement bar.
On the other side of local delicacies, the food in Prague absolutely lived up to all expectations, of course, you can try local Czech food and I wholeheartedly recommend you do, but being a major capital there is naturally an amazing array of spectacular world foods to try and expand your horizons. In most pubs, we usually ended up trying something locally enjoyed, like fried cheeses and pickled sausages which pair with beers perfectly. We enjoyed cheese-covered burgers, Korean corndogs, a variety of mouth-watering breakfast foods to start the day in style and many cakes and sweets. Prague is absolutely a brilliant place for experiencing a wide variety of foods, a little something for everyone and plenty of great and varied tastes to enjoy. The standouts for me include the Utopenci, or drowned men, loaded with pickled onions and peppers served with a dense bread - just the perfect accompaniment to a lunchtime beer. The cheese-covered burgers at Hoxton Burgers were simply phenomenal if perhaps the most messy eating experience I have ever had (good thing they are served with gloves!).
As a major city, there is plenty to enjoy beyond the historical streets - for me, that alone would be plenty to keep me entertained, but if you are in the mood for something different I am sure you can find an experience to suit you. Our days were split up by visiting Cat Cafés and the previously mentioned Beer Museum and Horror Bars. When looking to see a museum that wasn't all about ancient structures and artworks then a walk around the "Museum of Torture and Torture Instruments" and the "Sex Machines Museum" sure did offer something very different! When we fancied something other than a beer, we dropped into the Robotic Bar to watch our drinks be mixed up automatically and when the 40-degree weather was just about too much for us then we had a crisp 15 minutes in an ice bar, it was astonishing how quickly we went from sweating to being excited to escape back to the warmth! There are attractions and experiences for all tastes and prices - I'm sure you will love Prague on your visit too.
This is really just the broad strokes of our trip to the Czech Republic, and I cannot wait to go into more details about some of my favourite spots on our little break to the Czech Republic. We were blessed with gorgeous weather and got to make the most of our time in and around the city, but I still feel like I could visit again and find new attractions, new experiences and new incredible pieces of history to enjoy all over again. Prague is a wonderful city, a lively capital and just a great place to be; spending our evening as the sun gently set in one of the little portal-window-turned-bar along the riverfront made it clear, that Prague is a must-see city!
